To install FaxBuddy on your hard disk drive:
1)Create a sub-directory on your hard disk for FaxBuddy and
it's related files. We suggest you call it \FAXBUDDY.
2)Copy all the files contained in the distribution archive
into the new sub-directory.
3)Copy the file FAXBUDDY.BAT to your root directory.
4)Change to the root directory and type FAXBUDDY to start
the program.
Additional installation steps for Windows 3.1 users:
After following steps 1-4 above from DOS, follow these
additional steps to add FaxBuddy to a Program Manager group
in Windows:
1)From the Program Manager File menu, select New.
2)Click OK on the New Program Object dialog box to select a
new Program Item.
3)Fill in the Program Item Properties dialog box as
follows:
Type FaxBuddy 1.0 in the Description line.
Click on Browse or type Alt-B to let Program Manager
find the FaxBuddy program information file (PIF) for
you. Navigate through the files dialog box to select
FAXBUDDY.PIF in the \FAXBUDDY subdirectory of your hard
disk drive. Click on OK or press RETURN when
FAXBUDDY.PIF is highlighted.
Click on Change Icon or type Alt-I to choose a new icon
for the program.
Press RETURN at the Change Icon alert message dialog
box, then click on Browse or type Alt-B to browse for a
new icon. Navigate through the files dialog box to
select FAXBUDDY.ICO in the \FAXBUDDY subdirectory of
your hard disk drive. Click on OK or press RETURN when
the icon name is highlighted.
Click on OK or press Return THREE TIMES to confirm your
selections and add FaxBuddy to your Windows Program
Manager. You can drag and drop the FaxBuddy icon into
any Program Manager group you like.
Getting Started with FaxBuddy:
FaxBuddy was designed with a familiar pull-down menu
structure and plainly-indicated functions so that many
veteran PC users will be able to get right to work.
Here are the steps you should use to get the program
configured and ready to use so that you can explore it on
your own as quickly as possible. These steps assume you are
comfortable with the pull-down menu structure and basic PC
keyboard skills needed for many of today's popular programs.
Using a mouse:
FaxBuddy fully supports a mouse when run from the MS-DOS
command line, and can support a mouse when running as a DOS
application in full-screen mode under Windows 3.0 or 3.1.
To use FaxBuddy with a mouse, be sure to load the mouse
driver software for your mouse before starting FaxBuddy.
FaxBuddy looks for the presence of the mouse driver software
when it initializes.
To start the program: Type FAXBUDDY at the DOS prompt and
press RETURN, or double-click on the FaxBuddy 1.0 icon in
the Windows Program Manager.
Configuring FaxBuddy:
There are several menu choices you should select to get
FaxBuddy ready to use on your system. Follow these steps to
visit each of the important configuration areas before you
print your first cover sheet:
File/Setup/User Setup: Fill in each of the input
fields on this menu to add your name, address, company
information and telephone numbers to FaxBuddy.
File/Setup/Printer: Select the proper printer port for
your system from Print Destination, then set Printer
Type for the kind of printer you'll be using, and
optionally set any desired options under Page Layout to
customize the printout if you desire.
For all Epson dot-matrix impact printers and many Epson-
compatible dot-matrix printers, choose Epson 24-Pin or
Epson 9-Pin from the Printer Type menu. If you are
using continuous-form paper, set the page length to 66
lines. Enter a top and bottom margin, if desired. We
recommend a top margin of at least three lines, to give
your fax machine something to "grab" before the
printout begins. You may also want to add an additional
top margin if you are printing on letterhead paper, so
that FaxBuddy skips down past your letterhead before
printing.
For HP LaserJet Series II or Series III and most HP
LaserJet-compatible laser printers, choose HP LaserJet
in the Printer Type menu. Most laser printers print
only 64 lines per page, so set the page length to 64;
you may need to experiment a bit to get the pages to
break properly.
File/Setup/Save Setup: After you have set all of your
configuration information into FaxBuddy, use this menu
selection to save your preferences into a configuration
file. If you save them to the configuration file
FAXBUDDY.CFG (or whatever filename you typed into
File/Setup/Filename Defaults/Configuration Filename),
your preferences will be loaded automatically each time
FaxBuddy is started.
Creating and printing a fax cover sheet with FaxBuddy:
Creating a simple fax cover sheet with FaxBuddy is quick and
easy:
1.Start the program, and press Atl-D from the main menu to
bring up the fax directory listing.
2.Press Return key to accept the default fax directory and
move to the fax directory listing.
3.Use the arrow keys or the speed-search functions to
highlight the person you wish to send your cover sheet
to.
4.Press return to select the highlighted entry.
5.Type Alt-P to jump to the Print sub-menu. Complete the
dialog for the number of additional pages you will be
sending and choose a file to print with your cover sheet,
if desired.
6.Type G or select Go! to print your cover sheet!
Using a fax directory:
FaxBuddy comes to you with a fax number directory stored in
a file called FAXBUDDY.FAX. When you first use FaxBuddy, it
contains only the fax number for Buddy Ware, Inc. You may
also add, save, change or delete entries in this directory
by using the appropriate Directory menu selections.
When you're ready to start your own fax directory, choose
Directory/Create Database and enter a 1-8 character name for
your new fax directory. Then use Directory/Add Entry to
enter new fax listings into your file.
If you want to have your new fax directory loaded
automatically by FaxBuddy each time the program starts, use
File/Setup/Filename Defaults to set the default fax
directory filename to the file you want to load.
Use Directory/Select Entry to choose an entry from the list
to be printed on your cover sheet.
Each time you select and use an entry in a fax directory,
the Count field in the listing is incremented by FaxBuddy.
In this way, your most-used directory entries automatically
"float" to the top of the list where they're easy to find.
Of course, you may also manually edit the Count field to
force certain entries to the desired regions of your
directory -- the higher the number, the higher relative
position in the list that entry will take.
Fax Directory Speed Search:
The directory listings have a built-in speed search feature
that allows you to quickly find the entry you want, even in
directories of hundreds of names.
When the directory list is displayed, simply type the first
letter of the desired entry. The list cursor will "zoom" to
the next entry in the directory with that initial letter.
Continue typing the initial letter of the desired entry
until the cursor lands on the entry you want.
You may also use the PgUp/PgDn and Home/End keys to quickly
page through the list, or click on the up and down elevator
buttons on the right side of the directory box if you have a
mouse.
Using the MemoPad:
The FaxBuddy MemoPad is a fully-featured text editor with
several advanced functions, including multiple, resizeable
windows, cut/paste/copy to and from the internal clipboard,
and automatic word wrap. The MemoPad reads and writes
standard ASCII text files, so it can accept and generate
text files that you can use with other DOS or Windows
programs.
If you have used the Microsoft Windows Notepad, the MS-DOS
5.0 EDIT program, or other Windows or Window-like editors,
you will feel right at home with the FaxBuddy MemoPad.
To enter the MemoPad, select Memo (Alt-M) from the main
menu. The MemoPad menu appears and an editing box fills the
screen.
If you have a mouse, you will find it very useful in
navigating around the MemoPad.
Keyboard users should remember to press the ALT key in
combination with the first letter of the MemoPad menu
selections to invoke menu functions.
Selecting text with the keyboard:
Hold down the SHIFT key while you use the arrow keys to
select text in any direction. Selected text will show up as
highlighted on the screen.
Selecting text with the mouse:
Click and drag the mouse pointer over the desired text.
Release the button to stop selecting text.
Once text has been selected, you may:
CUT it out of the editing file and temporarily place
the selected text into the MemoPad's internal Clipboard
by pressing Shift-Del or selecting Cut from the Edit
menu. This deletes the selected text from the screen,
but it is still held in the Clipboard until you
Cut/Copy again or exit FaxBuddy. Text will remain on
the Clipboard even after you exit the MemoPad and
return to the FaxBuddy main menu.
Permanently DELETE the selected text by pressing Del or
selecting Delete from the Edit menu. This removes the
text from the editing file but DOES NOT keep a copy of
it in the internal Clipboard.
COPY the selected text into the MemoPad's internal
Clipboard for later use by pressing Ctrl-Ins. The
selected text is not removed from the editing file.
Whenever text is being held in the Clipboard, you may:
Paste it into the editing file by pressing Shift-Ins or
selecting Paste from the Edit menu. The pasted text is
inserted in the editing file at the current cursor
position. You can tell that text is being held in the
Clipboard when Paste is highlighted in the Edit menu.
Simple editing operations:
To MOVE a block of text: Select the text, press Shift-
Del (Cut), move the cursor to the new position, press
Shift-Ins (Paste).
To COPY a block of text: Select the text, press Ctrl-
Ins (Copy), move the cursor to the new position, press
Shift-Ins (Paste).
Using editing windows:
To Maximize a window so that it fills the editing
screen, select the window, then press Alt-Space X, or
click the Maximize Up Arrow in the top right corner of
the window.
To Minimize a window so that it is reduced to a tiny
box, select the window, then press Alt-Space N, or
click the Minimize Down Arrow in the top right corner
of the window.
To Restore a window to the size it was prior to the
last minimization or maximization, select the window,
then press Alt-Space R, or click the Restore double-
headed arrow (when available) in the top right corner
of the window.
To Move a window around the screen, first make sure the
window is not maximized. Then select the window and
press Alt-Space M, then press the desired arrow keys to
re-position the window. Press RETURN to stop moving the
window and place the window at the current position.
With a mouse, simply click and drag on the window's
title bar to move the window.
To Size a window, first make sure the window is not
maximized or minimized. Then select the window and
press Alt-Space S, then press the arrow keys to adjust
the right and bottom borders of the window until the
window is the desired size. Then press RETURN to stop
sizing the window. With a mouse, simply click and drag
the sizing gadget in the lower right corner of the
window frame.
To Close a window and finish editing, press Ctrl-F4 or
double-click the Close Box gadget in the top left
corner of the window frame.
To Copy or Move Text Between Windows, first select the
window with the text to be copied or moved, then select
the text. Press Ctrl-Ins to copy or Shift-Del to move.
Now select the window that is to receive the text and
press Shift-Ins to paste it in at the current cursor
position.
FaxBuddy Hot-Keys:
To speed your use of FaxBuddy, we have installed some
convenient hot-keys that will zip you instantly to some of
the most-used functions. You may press any of the hot-keys
anytime, and depending on which mode you are in (Main or
MemoPad), the hot-key will take you directly to the
appropriate function.
These Main Mode hot-keys are available whenever you are NOT
within the MemoPad system and only the top-most horizontal
(Main Menu) is shown on the screen:
Alt-P - Print -- Takes you directly to the File/Print
menu, where you can enter or accept the number of pages
following the cover sheet, choose a memo file to print
with your cover sheet, or simply press G to begin
printing.
Alt-X - Exit -- Takes you directly to the File/Exit
menu, where you will be asked to confirm your action
before exiting back to DOS. FaxBuddy will prompt you to
save or discard any configuration changes you may have
made that have not been saved.
These MemoPad Mode hot-keys are available anytime you are
within the MemoPad menu:
Alt-Q - Quit MemoPad -- Stops editing and prompts you
to confirm your decision to exit the MemoPad and return
to the Main menu. MemoPad will prompt you to save or
discard any editing changes in all open windows that
have not been saved to disk. Alt-F4 may also be used to
retain keystroke compatibility for Windows users.
Alt-S - Save edits -- Saves the editing changes you
have made to the CURRENT editing window. Does NOT save
changes to text in other open editing windows.
Options:
The Options menu lets you specify several special messages
that can be printed on your cover sheets. You can have
FaxBuddy add these informative messages to your cover sheets
just by selecting any of the items on the Options menu.
Any options you select for each fax cover sheet are re-set
to default settings after you exit FaxBuddy.
Printing:
One of FaxBuddy's major benefits is that you can print any
type of text message along with your cover sheet. Many users
will find that just a cover sheet with a short message can
serve as the entire fax transmission.
FaxBuddy will print any ASCII text file, whether you created
it with FaxBuddy or any other DOS text editor.
First, make sure the file you wish to print is located in
the \FAXBUDDY subdirectory. Then, simply select the file you
wish to print from the File/Print/Filename menu. The
filename you select will be printed at the bottom of your
cover sheet, continuing onto subsequent pages as needed.
Note that you must always select a directory entry before
printing a cover sheet.
Database Import/Export:
The program is supplied with empty database format "shells"
for Borland's Paradox and dBase programs. If you use either
of those programs, you may import and export fax number
directory information to and from FaxBuddy.
For example, an empty Paradox (Version 3.5) table format is
supplied, called FAXBUDDY.DB. You may use Paradox to enter
and edit name and fax numbers into the table, as well as an
arbitrary "count" field. To export the data in the Paradox
table for use by FaxBuddy, follow these steps:
1) From Paradox, select Tools, Export/Import, Export,
ASCII, Delimited
2) Select the table to export, in this case FAXBUDDY
3) Enter an output path and file name for the exported
data.
Paradox will write the data to a file with the filename you
enter and an extension of .TXT. Re-name that file to an
extension of .FAX, so that FaxBuddy can recognize it as a
fax directory. You will then be able to use the data from
within FaxBuddy.
To import data created in FaxBuddy into your database:
1) Re-name or copy the FILENAME.FAX file to FILENAME.TXT
2) Use your database program's file import feature to
import the data as ASCII, comma-delimited data. Paradox
users should then use Modify/Restructure to change the
structure of the table created during import to match
the structure of the example table supplied with the
program. Pay special note that the Count field is *NOT*
a number field type, but an A3 field type.
